Firefighters help families

Firefighters from all three White River Township fire stations are coming together to help those in need this Christmas season.  In concert with the department's annual toy drive, the firefighters are banning together to buy gifts and food for several families that needed some help with expenses this year.  Even members in the administrative office have contributed to help with the project.  This is the seventh straight year that firefighters have been collecting money and gifts for the drive, which continues to grow each year by helping more and more families in need.

Several of the families being assisted are in need due to recent tragedies, including a house fire that destroyed one families' home and all of their Christmas gifts.  All of the families are from the White River Township Fire Protection District.  Through a partnership with the Johnson County United Way, the department receives a list of names each year and then goes out to procure funds and other donations.  This year, donations have poured in, including two significant gifts from the Greenwood Meijer and the Greenwood Target.  "These two companies have been extremely helpful in our cause", said Captain Charlie Fraker, who heads the project for the department.  Firefighters will make the gift purchases this week, wrap them at a wrapping party with the help of students from Center Grove Middle School North, and then deliver them in time for Christmas.  If you would like to help with this year's project, please contact Captain Charlie Fraker at (317) 888-8337 or by e-mail by clicking HERE.  The photos below are from the wrapping party held at Station 53.
