Department teams with Menards to save lives

As a result of recent smoke detector testing, it was determined that photoelectric detectors or a combination detector with both Photoelectric and Ionization technologies provides the best protection.  With this information, local fire departments searched for a merchant to assist them in their campaign of providing these types of detectors to their communities.  White River Township Fire Prevention Chief Eric Brown was able to work with local Greenwood Menards Managers Shane Knoblett and Drew Howell and was able to negotiate a discount price to the fire department for these combination detectors.  This resulted in a savings of about $5.50 per detector.  The department’s research found that the department could purchase the detectors thru the local Menards for a price that was less than what was being offered directly from the manufacturer.  Additionally, the managers also allowed Chief Brown to make this price available to other local fire departments outside of Greenwood.

Over the last two months, Menards has sold over 1,500 detectors to White River Township Fire Department, Wayne Township Fire Department, and the Johnson County Firefighters Association. The Johnson County Firefighters Association purchased these detectors with funds from a local fundraiser and plans to supply each fire department in Johnson County with 50 detectors each to allow them to provide these to persons who live within their respective fire districts.

The department would like to thank the Greenwood Menards Store on State Road 135 and their management for their assistance in this campaign. The amount saved by the fire department exceeds more than $8,000 to date.

The department would also like to remind everyone that if you do not have a combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector in your home you may purchase one from the Greenwood Menards store located at 300 S Marlin Drive, or if you can not afford a smoke detector, you may call your local fire department in Johnson County to obtain a free detector that will assist you in assuring your family is protected with the best type of smoke detector.
