Fish found dead in pond

         Hundreds of fish died in a pond in the Highland Park subdivision in the Center Grove area Wednesday.  About 300 bass and bluegill floated to the pond's edge or lodged in algae on property along Eagle Trace Drive. The area in the upscale subdivision smelled like an open septic tank, neighbors said.  An Indiana Department of Environmental Management examination found that a lack of oxygen killed the fish. Extreme heat over the past few days reduced the level of oxygen in the shallow pond, spokeswoman Amy Hartsock said.  "Essentially, they died a natural death," she said. "In shallow water, it's not uncommon."  Some fish survived, she said.  Water in the pond runs into a stream, but IDEM investigators found no evidence of chemical contamination, Hartsock said.  Either property owners or the homeowners association would be responsible for the cleanup because the pond is private property, Hartsock said. She said dead fish can be disposed of like normal waste.   (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
