Dozing driver hits home

         A driver fell asleep at the wheel, snapping trees and splintering mailboxes before slamming into a garage in a Greenwood subdivision, police said.  Police were called to 1789 Eagle Trace at 4 p.m. Thursday. According to a police report, 20-year-old Ryan Hanegan, of Greenwood, had crashed into the house’s garage and flower bed.  The path Hanegan’s car took was obvious, said Deputy Rick Shipp of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

         A stretch of about 100 feet was littered with debris from three smashed mailboxes. Two trees were snapped off and lying on the ground. A lamppost was dented and missing its glass top. Lines of flattened grass showed the where the car crossed the lawn.  The impact collapsed the front of the car, twisting a wheel sideways and crushing the headlights.  No one was injured.  The house’s owner wasn’t home when the crash occurred.

         Hanegan showed no signs of intoxication, Shipp said.  His mother has a medical history of blacking out, but it’s never happened to Hanegan before, according to the police report.  Hanegan said he can’t remember anything leading up to the crash. He said he woke up when he was halfway across the yard and tried to swerve to miss the front of the house before hitting the garage.  No charges were filed in the accident.   (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
