Subdivision prowler arrested
A Mooresville man dropped his wallet in a White River Township subdivision. But when he went to retrieve it, police arrested him, and not just because he apparently was driving a stolen vehicle. The dropped wallet led police to the man they believed two homeowners in Highland Park had complained about.
Residents reported seeing a prowler in the area, and one homeowner found a wallet near his back door. When the wallet’s owner came to meet police, they arrested him on two outstanding warrants and for the stolen vehicle he was driving, said Maj. Steve Byerly, chief of investigations at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Brian S. McCubbins, 24, was arrested on charges including receiving stolen property. He was not charged with a crime related to being in the subdivision.
Homeowner John Price thought it was strange when his doorbell rang but no one was there Dec. 23. When he walked around his home the next morning and found a man’s wallet by the back door, he called police. Police took the wallet. A background search on McCubbins showed he had warrants for his arrest in Wayne County and for contempt at the Greenwood City Court, according to the police report. A Johnson County detective called McCubbins but did not identify himself as a police officer. The two agreed to meet at Rally’s in Greenwood at 9 p.m. Wednesday. Police already planned to arrest McCubbins for the warrants and for driving as a habitual offender, but then they found out the vehicle he was driving was reported stolen in Richmond, according to the report. Police in Richmond will likely file more charges against the man, he said.
McCubbins, 95 Echo Lane, was arrested on a charge of theft/receiving stolen
property, contempt of court, as a habitual traffic offender and on a Wayne
County warrant. He was released from the Johnson County Jail on $6,189 bond.
